I hope people can get to read New Vessel, I've worked for over eight or nine years developing its world and characters. Though not everything I've worked on will be in the books, most of the major characters are there!
New Vessel will be three books regardless of what happens, so I hope even a few people will read it!
How This Fantasy Book Came To Be
Hi, I'm Tessedan DeValere! I'm a coder, and even if I'd like to say that most of my experience is in game development... well now it's mostly in general programming and a little of full stack.
I love fantasy and magic, but I never thought that would translate to writing a fantasy book or any book for that matter.
I started writing a while ago when I attended Full Sail for the story and design of a game, and even if I am pretty bad at it I kept going.
One day I finally realized I could write a book instead of just focusing on game design and designing the world, so I started doing it. This was about 2015. At the time I already had an idea of the world, its inhabitants and the creatures that roam it. Though I had no idea how to write since I had never read a fiction book at the time. Even now I have a hard time focusing when reading since my attention span has an attention span for specific things in my life.
To give a small glimpse at how bad at writing I was at the time, the first rendition of the Vessel series was what could right now be the sample for New Vessel. Though this was about 70k words.
I was writing under the assumption that I had to describe every single thing. So I ended up giving a near endless description of everything around the characters. If they were in the room I described the room, its furniture, the windows, the curtains, the colors. Everything was described as I envisioned, kind of like I was watching a movie and describing what I saw.
It was a very rough draft. And I gave up shortly after since I thought it was a horrendous thing I had just created.
Though one thing I didn't give up was the world building. It's one of my favorite parts. The world kept growing and growing, the characters in it went from main characters to people that lived at different times. The few people I wrote about became forgotten legends in New Vessel, but without them the world would not exist.
It got to the point that I had a few favorites and hired a few artists to bring them closer to life. These are all from before New Vessel, but one of them especially is important to the entire story.
The world ended up having three ages from the humans arriving to Osalde all the way to New Vessel.
I did end up getting back to writing later, and I feel like I did a bit better but it was still extremely rough. All until I did one of the toughest thing I've done in my life. I joined a community and asked for feedback.
The feedback was brutal, it nearly made me want to quit on the spot.
But I kept going that same day. I knew if I quit that day I would've never come back to it for a very long time, if at all. So I kept going. In the end it took a long time, but I rewrote everything to become more readable.
I was so proud of the new version, so I went straight back for more feedback. Though this time I was more gently destroyed than the last time.
I felt like I got better, so I kept writing. Then I got the idea that I might be able to publish it. Why not? Is mostly what drove me to do it.
New Vessel was mostly finished by 2024, I did kind of self publish it at one point but I didn't like my process so I decided to try out a publisher.
So here we are now. After hiring several freelancer artists, I got Eska and Valen in a cover. I did try to have a "normal" book cover, but honestly it might've been a bit too "normal" for my liking.
Today, at the time of posting this my publisher is still working on my the new rendition of the cover. Though for now this is what I have.
If you'd like to know when the book comes out, feel free to submit your email at the bottom of the page.
